Queries the public Ensembl REST API hosted by EMBL-EBI for genome data on more than 250 vertebrate species, covering gene lookups by symbol or Ensembl stable ID, DNA and protein sequence retrieval, variant consequence prediction with the Variant Effect Predictor, ortholog and gene-tree searches, feature overlaps in a genomic window, and coordinate conversion between human genome assemblies such as GRCh37 and GRCh38. Use when the user names a gene, transcript, protein, SNP or rsID and wants Ensembl annotation, sequences, cross-references to databases such as UniProt or RefSeq, predicted effects of a variant, or the counterpart of a gene in another species. Not for bulk whole-genome downloads, processing of local VCF or BAM files, non-vertebrate organisms such as yeast or E. coli, or clinical diagnostic interpretation.
