Quickstart

From nothing to a skill your agent is using — about five minutes, no card required.

Before you begin

You need:

  • Claude Code installed on the machine where you want to use your skills.
  • A terminal on that machine with bash, curl, python3, unzip and shasum (macOS and most Linux systems already have all of these).

Set it up

  1. Create your accountGo to Create account, enter your email and a password of at least 10 characters. The free plan needs no card.
  2. Choose your skillsOpen My skills in the sidebar. Browse the marketplace and press Add to pin the skills you want. The free plan pins up to 5; you can swap them whenever you like. See Choosing your skills.
  3. Connect your machineOpen Install in the sidebar and press Connect this machine. SkilVault creates an API key and shows one command. Copy it and run it in a terminal on your machine:

    It installs the skilvault client to ~/.local/bin/skilvault, adds a stub for each CLI it finds, and saves your key to ~/.config/skilvault/config. The key is shown only once, so copy the command before you leave the page.
  4. Start a Claude Code sessionClaude picks up the new skill automatically. If it does not appear, run /reload-plugins or start a new session.

Check that it works

In a terminal, list what your key can use. The client is not on your PATH, so call it by its full path (or add an alias, shown below):

~/.local/bin/skilvault list

You should see one line per skill you added — its name, version and a short description. Then, in Claude Code, try:

Use the commit-lint skill to review my last commit message.

Claude runs skilvault read commit-lint, fetches the skill, verifies its checksum, and follows it. You can also just start real work — Claude checks the catalog with skilvault find at the start of non-trivial tasks and applies any skill that matches.
